Deferral of Admission for Undergraduate Students

If you are unable to begin your studies, you may request to defer your offer of admission to a future term, up to a maximum of 1 (one) year.

You are eligible to defer your admission for reasons such as:

  • You are planning to take a gap year to travel, work, etc.
  • Your study permit has been delayed.
  • You are attending a Yeshiva/Religious Institution.
  • You are required to attend mandatory Military Service Training.

You are not eligible to apply for a deferral if:

  • You want to defer your admission to attend an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • You have been admitted to the following programs:
    • Business Administration (BBA - Schulich School of Business)
    • Nursing (BScN)
    • Social Work (BSW)

How to apply

To apply for a deferral:

  • You must accept your offer of admission through MyFile or OUAC.
  • Submit all documentation to satisfy your admission conditions including, but not limited to, final official transcripts / grades and acceptable language test results.
  • Deferrals are not guaranteed and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Residence & Dining Plans

Students are responsible for cancelling or deferring their York University residence applications and dining plans in the event of a deferral. If your deferral is approved, be sure to submit an Application Cancellation form and cancel your dining plan for any sessions(s) you will not be attending, to avoid accruing interest or unplanned charges.

Deferral of scholarships

York University entrance scholarships are subject to change. Most scholarships and awards granted through an application process may be retained as part of your deferral and disbursed in a future entry term. Deferred scholarships will be subject to any conditions of the scholarship program in place for the session in which you begin your studies.
